What is the New Livable Housing Standard?

The Building Code of Australia has introduced the Livable Housing Standard, setting minimum accessibility requirements to make homes more inclusive for people with limited mobility. The key features include:

✔️ Step-free access from the property boundary or carpark into the home
✔️ Wider doors and hallways to accommodate wheelchairs
✔️ At least one step-free shower for safer, easier access
✔️ Minimum circulation spaces at toilets and provisions for future grab rails

The benefits are clear – homes that are easier to navigate, safer, and future-proofed for changing needs. However, the additional construction costs associated come at a difficult time, with budgets already stretched due to rising material and labour costs.
